MORE refugees from war torn Syria are likely to be given homes in Colchester, it has been revealed.

Twenty refugees are due to move to the town before Christmas.

And a meeting of Colchester Council's Cabinet heard the town was "highly likely" to give sanctuary to more refugees in the future.

At the moment the council will receive Government funding for five years to help accommodate and support the families.

The Government has said all the refugees will come from aid camps and Colchester Council has previously said it would particularly welcome those with health care experience who had teenage children as the area’s primary schools are filling up.

Council leader Paul Smith praised the organisers behind Welcome Refugees Colchester who support the refugees moving to Colchester.

The group held a welcome march through town and works to provide support and practical help to the refugees.

Robert Parks, speaking on behalf of the group, said: “We are very much heartened by the support we have got from the council and we had 300 people march in solidarity.

“There is currently a petition circulating for 50 refugees to be housed in Colchester. We are taking the lead with a most successful petition with over 650 signatures.”

Councillors said they would help the 20 Syrian refugees in any way possible.

Bill Frame, the council's portfolio holder for economic growth, said: “I shall contact businesses in Colchester to take on new employees from the refugees who are coming in and I shall do everything I can to encourage help.”

Tina Bourne, the council's portfolio holder for housing and public protection, added: “We feel very strongly the amount of pledges you have had is quite incredible.

"You talk about warmth and generosity and this is the genuine way you have gone about your business.

“I think you could look at setting up a Go Fund page as there are some things that are not ready to be bought yet but having the cash there will be good for organisations.”

Colchester has also provided homes for 20 translaters from Afghanistan who assisted British troops there.
