As Colchester turns into a city, new projects will be on a rise. But as the 5th Mcdonalds in Colchester is built, we have to evaluate whether or not we need any more fast food chains in the local area.
Speaking with a long term employee from another store in the Retail Park about their opinion. I asked for pros and cons, which they contributed.
Pros include bringing more money in - if more people came to Mcdonalds they may shop at the other stores (including Iceland and Home Bargains). Another is that Mcdonalds is well liked, maybe giving Colchester a rise in popularity. A drive-thru would also be popular, for quick and easy fast food. However, there are more cons. Turner Rise already has 3 fast food chains - Subway, Costa Coffee and Pizza Hut. The Mcdonalds could poach their customers, taking potential revenue. The chain was told they couldn't stay open for twenty four hours a day. Instead they were allowed to operate from 7am to 5am - totalling 22 hours. This could bring trouble to the area late at night. The new building has also taken up 60 parking spaces. This is inadequate for the retail park, as it is nearly always full to the brim without taking away more places.
Asked for an opinion, the employee said ‘ I don't think it’s needed, we already have many chains nearby. We’re in a time when obesity is at a peak, why are we encouraging it?’
