THE coalition running Colchester Council is likely to remain in power for two more years after the town’s Tories failed to make gains at the local elections.
With 20 of the 60 seats on the authority up for grabs, Labour capped a strong evening by gaining Wivenhoe Quay from the Conservatives.
Despite losing councillors across the country, the Lib Dems once again held firm in Colchester, successfully defending nine seats.
But it was a disappointing night for the Conservatives, who failed to win Shrub End from the Lib Dems despite the best efforts of candidate Darius Laws.
Colchester Council leader and Lib Dem Anne Turrell and Labour group leader Tim Young were both happy with the outcome.
But Conservative group leader Will Quince criticised the Lib Dems for allegedly relying on personal attacks on their opponents.
The Lib Dems now have 26 seats, Conservatives 23, Labour 8 and Highwoods Independent group 3. A Lib Dem, Labour and independent coalition formed in 2008 is likely to continue.
