Joe Dunne said he was pleased with the efforts of his Colchester United players following their 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat at the hands of West Ham United.
Goals from Joe Cole and James Collins gave the Hammers a two-goal cushion in front of a crowd of more than 6,500 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
And although Jabo Ibehre headed in a late consolation goal for the U's from the impressive Tosin Olufemi's assist, it was not enough to prevent defeat against their Premier League visitors.
Dunne said: "I'm really pleased with the players efforts tonight.
"It was a great lesson for everyone.
"West Ham's work ethic was excellent and they were so quick to get behind the ball but it was a great lesson for everyone, playing against quality opposition.
"It was a great way to encourage what we're trying to do and there was a lot of positive stuff, which is what we've been putting in place."
