Drey Wright was on target as Colchester United beat Dagenham and Redbridge 1-0 in a friendly.
The U’s winger tapped home from a corner after five minutes, after the Daggers had failed to clear a ball across the six-yard box.
Colchester should have gone further ahead when they were awarded a penalty, after Jack Simmons was brought down in the area.
But Dagenham goalkeeper Jordan Seabright saved Alex Gilbey’s spot-kick to keep the home team in the match.
Gilbey almost atoned for his penalty miss in the second half when he hit a post with a long-range effort.
But in the end, a solitary goal proved enough for Colchester to seal victory.
