Colchester United were knocked out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy by Gillingham after losing 4-2 on penalties.
The U’s were knocked out on spot-kicks, after the second-round tie had finished 3-3 in normal time.
Stuart Nelson saved spot-kicks from George Moncur and Tom Eastman before scoring from the spot himself, to send the visitors through.
Drey Wright put the U’s ahead and although Ben Dickenson quickly equalised for the Gills, Sanchez Watt restored the hosts lead from the spot before half-time, in the second-round tie.
But Bradley Dack levelled for Gillingham early in the second half and Antonio German put the visitors ahead with 16 minutes to go, before substitute Freddie Sears took the game to penalties with three minutes of normal time to go, but the U’s went out.
