Magnus Okuonghae is the new U's captain for the 2014/15 season.
New signing, and former Southend United player, Sean Clohessy will be vice-captain.
Okuonghae signed for Colchester United in the summer of 2009 and has been with the club for five years.
This is his second stint as captain as former manager Aidy Boothroyd handed the centre-half the armband during his time as boss.
U's manager Joe Dunne said: "“He’s a big, strong and powerful player who’s been here a long time and he knows the club.
“He’s also got a good relationship with the fans and I think it’s the right time for him.
“He’s been captain before and I think it’s the right time in his career for him to step up and help others, which I think he can do well."
