Kurtis Guthrie is to leave Colchester United by mutual consent, the club have announced.
The 24-year-old has had his contract, which was due to run out this summer, cancelled.
Guthrie's last game for Colchester proved to be their home defeat against Yeovil on March 17, when he was substituted in the second half.
The fiery striker had been barracked by some Colchester fans against the Glovers and departed straight down the tunnel, after being taken off in the second half of the 1-0 loss.
He had earlier squabbled with team-mate Sammie Szmodics over who should take a first-half penalty.
Guthrie joined Colchester in the summer of 2016, after leaving Forest Green Rovers.
Having initially been deployed in a midfield role by boss John McGreal, he eventually made a successful switch to a forward position and ended up with 12 goals in his first campaign at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, which was cut short by an ankle injury.
Guthrie missed the majority of the first half of the current campaign before returning earlier this year, scoring against Cheltenham Town.
In total, the former Accrington Stanley attacker played 49 games for the U's, scoring 13 goals.
