A LEGENDARY music arranger behind major 1960s hits for artists including Tom Jones has died, leaving behind family and friends in Clacton who say they are proud of their “loved and adored” hero.
Charles Blackwell, who died aged 84, on August 14, worked on hits for Tom Jones including What's new Pussycat and I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, and the single Release Me for Engelbert Humperdinck in the 1960s.
Charles’ instrumental music helped define the Swinging Sixties in London.
During his career he worked with Shirley Bassey, Marlene Dietrich, Lulu, Dionne Warwick, Brigitte Bardot, David Hasselhoff, Mike Sarnes, and others.
Charles was also commissioned by the European Parliament to orchestrate and conduct the European anthem with a 70-strong orchestra for a new recording played at every Parliamentary sitting.
Charles’s family revealed he didn’t find every musical opportunity exciting, and he turned down stars such as Abba, Frank Sinatra, Olivia Newton John and others.
Charles also worked on two Burt Bacharach film scores, before moving in 1979 to Clacton to live near wife Doreen’s parents.
Charles had a great love for golf and played for many years at Clacton Golf Club where he became captain.
Granddaughter Hannah Lott said when her grandfather moved down to Clacton, he bought a large 14-bed house on the seafront, which he rented out to vulnerable people including those in social care.
Hannah said: “He was the kindest man. No matter how successful he was, he was humble and would always care for others.
"He was a fabulous grandad and a brilliant dad to my mum who ended up moving into his home to help care for him and she did a marvellous job."
Mandy Blackwell, Charles’ daughter, said: “Dad, you are loved and adored. I will always cherish our memories. A hole is left in our hearts.
“You really are the most incredible father and grandfather anyone could wish for. Our gentle giant who would always put everyone’s needs before your own.”
Charles’ grandchildren - Sheryl, Hannah and Jai - added: "Grandad, we are so sad without you. Your house is empty, and our hearts are hurting.
“Hannah has managed to copyright a song you wrote, and we will be playing it at your funeral. We hope we've done you proud like you’ve done us proud.
"Charles is now at peace with his wife Doreen, daughter Sharon and his favourite ‘gran’ Charlotte."
Charles leaves behind his daughter Mandy, six grandchildren and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will take place on Friday, September 6, at Weeley Crematorium at 11.45am.
