I have wanted to visit the Lexden Crown for ages. Billed as a good pub with equally good grub I decided there was no better time to go than on a Sunday to try out its roasts.
An intimate setting with friendly staff and a good drink list settled us in well. We decided against having a starter as soon as we saw the menu. With it being Sunday there was little to choose from and decided a roast would be big enough with a pudding.
With three roast dishes and plenty of fish on the menu I felt spoilt for choice.
I decided to go for the stuffed pork shoulder and my husband ordered the sirloin roast.
Seeing as we hadn’t ordered a starter we also threw in some chunky chips.
Both our main meals were good, not overfilling but with plenty of crispy roast potatoes, meat and real gravy (as my husband likes to call it). The Yorkshire pudding was huge and equally as good.
My only quibble was using the word “stuffed” on my dish on the menu. Seeing as the pork came as a few pieces of meat I could not tell you what, if anything, it had been stuffed with. But I was pleased to see it was thick meat instead of the thin processed type you so often get at a pub Sunday roast.
On to desserts, and there was plenty to get my mouth salivating again.
In the end I chose the chocolate mousse with my husband bagsying the lemon tart.
Both were a good size and delicious. Although my chocolate mousse was incredibly moreish it was not a mousse. It was more like the thick type of filling you would find in a chocolate tart, not that I am complaining. I still loved it.
My husband said his pastry was lovely too and gobbled the lot.
The staff at the Lexden Crown were all smiles and very helpful.
It seemed an ideal place to go as a couple or a family, with a number of children eating at the same time as us.
