IT is hard to comprehend after seeing how stopping cars using the High Street resulted in other areas of Colchester becoming more polluted that there is so much enthusiasm for the proposed bus gate at the entrance to North Station Road which will have the same result - especially with the addition of 93 more flats.
It now seems that a spokesperson for the cycling community is now pedalling the scheme by stating that, along with the proposed cycle lanes, it will provide a gear change in the way people travel – he expects thousands to take to cycles – thus reducing pollution (Gazette, August 2, “‘Bus gate will stop 2,000 rat runners’”).
However, likely as not, in reality they will just saddle Colchester with more obstacles and they should put a brake on it.
