A petition asking for a fresh consultation on the Colchester High Street car ban is closing in on 1,500 signatures.
Fair Access to Colchester wants Essex County Council and Colchester Council to put the car ban, which started on March 17, on hold and hold a "genuine" consultation with disabled and older people.
It is calling for "measures to allow access to every part of the town".
A total of 1,494 had signed the petition by today at 8pm.
A spokeswoman for the group said there is no target, but the response shows the consultation was poor.
She said it plans to issue papers to Colchester County Court asking for a review of the car ban after Essex County Council failed to respond by Friday's deadline.
She said: "It is indicative of the whole communication process in the last two years.
"The petition show the support out there."
