A KEEN runner who was told he should take off his trainers for good is taking on the London Marathon.
Robert Brown, of Hewes Close, Colchester, suffers from spondylitis, a degenerative back condition.
Doctors told him three years ago he should give up running.
But Mr Brown, who could barely walk, started his own exercises to improve his condition.
He said: “I started running again just after the marathon last year.
“A lot of people say ‘I’m going to do it’ after watching it on TV but I was so determined and started doing all the local runs.”
Mr Brown, 56, is hoping to complete the London Marathon in under five hours. His time ten years ago was four and a half.
He said: “I’m running this year for the RNIB.
“Glaucoma runs through my family so it seems a good cause.”
