COLCHESTER'S controversial High Street car ban has been scrapped, it has been confirmed.

Essex County Council has pulled the plug on the scheme after scores of objections from traders and members of the public.

The Colchester Council scheme was brought in on March 17.

It will come to an end just five weeks later, on Sunday April 21.

The county council had been criticised by Colchester Council for the ban, despite it implementing it on its behalf.

Will Quince, conservative group leader on Colchester Council, who campaigned against the car ban, welcomed the news.
