Colchester's car ban was lifted hours after a protest on the steps of the town hall.
Protestors carried a coffin and held banners saying: "RIP, the death of a town."
They stood outside the town hall members of a monitoring group, set up to assess how the car ban is going since it was introduced on March 17, went in for a meeting.
Hours after the meeting at 9.30am, Essex County Council announced the car ban will end on Sunday, April 21.
