A BUSINESS group has said the two councils behind the failed Colchester High Street car ban should make sure any new policy will not adversely impact the small business community.
The car ban, which came into effect on March 17, is due to be suspended on Sunday, April 21, after Essex County Council announced its intention to revoke a traffic order before telling Colchester Council.
Janet Jack, Chairman of the North East Essex branch of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “In light of the failed High Street restrictions, it is critical that both local authorities consider the impact of their policies on small businesses, especially retailers.
“The impact of ill-considered schemes can be swift and devastating to small businesses, which do not have the resources to weather such storms.”
She added: “For every £1 spent in an independent business, £1.76 is retained in the local community, so it is crucial that small business-friendly policies are adopted.”
Mrs Jack also said better consultation must take place before any new scheme is put forward: “We invite Colchester Council, Essex County Council and the other stakeholder and interest groups in Colchester to join us to begin the healing process after this difficult period and work together to create solutions to the unique issues that Colchester faces.”
