THOUSANDS of people are planning to march through Colchester during a weapon awareness demonstration.
Colchester High Street will be closed, between 11.30am and 12.30pm on Saturday, May 4, to allow anti-knife campaigners to walk down the street with banners urging people to stop carrying deadly weapons.
Among them will be organisers John Rigby and Caroline Shearer, whose 17-year-old son Jay Whiston was stabbed to death in Colchester in September.
Mrs Shearer said: “We need as many people as possible to come and join us.
“We want parents and police, anyone and everyone, young and old who care about the safety of our streets and keeping communities safe.
“This is about protection not politics, education not excuses.”
Anyone who wishes to take part is invited to meet at the top of the High Street near the Post Office at 11.30am before marching down the High Street to the war memorial and Castle Park.
