SUPERGRAN Mary Snowling is to take on her next challenge - trekking 13,000ft to the Machu Picchu Inca site in Peru.

Mary, 70, of Claudius Road, Colchester, will be encountering mountainous terrain for the three-day challenge, recommended for those aren’t frightened of fitness.

She said: “It is tough, it is strenuous. I am doing lots of walking with my backpack on and going to the gym three times a week.”

But Mary, who has previously dabbled in a spot of skydiving, added: “It has been one of my dreams, I have made most of my dreams come true and this is on the list.”

Mary will be flying out to Peru on June 1 with granddaughter Heather Derbyshire, also from Colchester, who organised the charity trip.

Mary’s trek will be in aid of Leavenheath-based Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare (Sesaw), where she has been a volunteer for ten years, and for Mistley charity, Swan Watch.

Heather, 18, and a student at Norwich University, will be raising cash for the PDSA.

Mary said the 82-kilometre trek will start from Cusco.

“She added: “I am so excited. I am going to do it because I don’t want to let my sponsors down. I will do it. I did a 13-mile walk for Sesaw last year and I was hurting, but no pain, no gain.”
