AN ILLEGAL homeless “village” was discovered by amateur filmmakers near a town-centre beauty spot.
The tents and improvised dens were found in a privately-owned wooded area of Hilly Fields.
Benjamin Mclean, 23, and four pals discovered the area, The Spinney, off Oak Road, while exploring on Sunday, April 21.
They have posted videos of their find on their Fat Cat Media Youtube site.
Some dens even have television aerials, generators, gas canisters and doors made from corrugated iron panels.
Police have confirmed they are supervising the area and Colchester Council is in discussion with the landowner over securing the land.
Landowner Richard Cromack was unaware that people had set up home there.
For full resident reaction, more pictures and interview with landowners see Monday's Gazette.
