A LONG-SERVING firefighter found dead at his home has been described as a man who loved being active, socialising and spending time with his family.
Martin Sibley, 48, a fireman for 24 years including 22 years at Colchester Fire Station, was found dead last month at his home in Keymer Way, Colchester.
His family, including daughters Holly and Millie, mum Evelyn and sister Jacquie, have spoken publicly about him for the first time.
In statement they said: “Martin loved life and enjoyed being active.
“He would regularly visit the gym, and always joined in whenever his colleagues went walking in the Peak or Lake Districts.
“He would go skiing at least once a year with Holly and Millie, and sometimes with colleagues.
“While at home, Martin enjoyed gardening where he maintained everything immaculately.
“Martin would often go out in Colchester and neighbouring villages drinking, eating and socialising among his close friends and colleagues.
“His favourite times were spent during days out with mum, Holly and Millie, and little Reggie, whether it was on a boating lake, or just playing pool, and eating at the Noodle Bar.
“Martin will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”
Mr Sibley was described as a devoted dad and a beloved son of Evelyn and his late father, Ron.
He was a brother to Jacquie, brother-in-law to David and uncle to Sophie, Aidan and Rowan.
He was also the proud owner of Reggie, his dog, who he took to compete in the Earls Court dog show every year.
Mr Sibley raised thousands of pounds for charity by walking along the Great Wall of China and in 2009 was awarded a long service and good conduct medal in 2009.
He was found hanged at home.
His coffin was carried to Colchester Cemetery on a fire engine on Friday and ther was a fire service guard of honour.
An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.
