A MAN has told how he was arrested on suspicion of murdering his neighbour after he discovered his body.

Terry Hurley was handcuffed by officers shortly after they were called to flats in Turner Road, Colchester, at lunchtime on Sunday.

He had been called to the flat belonging his neighbour and friend Hazel Nutt

Mrs Nutt wanted help after her husband Chris was found lying on the bedroom floor.

It is understood Mr Nutt had fallen out of bed, suffering a fatal blow to his head.

But his death is still being treated as unexplained.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned.

Mr Hurley, who was quizzed by police into the early hours of Monday and then released without charge, said:  “I opened the bedroom door, looked around and there was Chris’s dead body.

"I felt for the pulse, his skin was ice cold and he had a trauma wound to the head and his chest was not rising and falling."

Mr Hurley dialled 999 and medics and police arrived a short time later.

Mr Hurley, 42, said Mr Nutt was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The next thing I know, a copper came into the community hall area, cuffed me and said I was under arrest on suspicion of murder.”

Mr Hurley was taken to Braintree Police Station and shortly afterwards Mrs Nutt was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to Clacton Police Station.

After Mr Hurley was questioned, he was released on bail and had to return to Colchester Police Station on Monday evening.

When he returned there, he was told no action was being taken against him.

Mrs Nutt was also released without charge.
