SAINSBURY’S look set to convert an iconic pub into a mini-supermarket.
Colchester Council’s planning committee has unanimously approved plans by the chain to create a Sainsbury’s Local store at the former Drury Arms in Layer Road.
Originally built in 1913 the pub is Grade II-listed, and the plans have generated mass opposition from local residents and traders who have concerns about traffic, noise and the impact on existing shops.
Permission is not needed to convert the pub into a convenience store under planning law, but was required for extension works and to install a cash machine.
