A HEADTEACHER has retired after more than two decades at a Greenstead school.
Christine Ireland, headteacher at Hazelmere Infants School, has been at the helm of the Hawthorn Avenue school for 22 years and a teacher for 38.
Far from stepping off the gas when she retires Mrs Ireland hopes to volunteer in Africa for a year, running teacher and headteacher training in Malawi or Rwanda.
Speaking on her last day Mrs Ireland, 59, said: "It is a very emotional day but the children have been amazing and the staff are so supportive. I could not ask for a better staff."
- Steven Turnbull, currently deputy head at Willow Brook Primary School, is taking over the headship at Hazelmere Infants.
