A SENIOR councillor has told protesters he is in favour of keeping Colchester’s threatened Abbots Activity Centre open.

More than 120 protesters gathered outside a meeting of Colchester Council’s scrutiny panel, which was last night discussing plans to close the centre, in Ladbrook Drive, to save £74,000 a year.

Dozens spoke at the meeting urging councillors to throw out the plans.

Councillor Marcus Harrington, panel deputy chairman, told the meeting: “All the thoughts I had before the meeting have been expressed and I have little to add.

“I am overwhelmed by the argument in favour of keeping Abbots open.”
