A coastal road had to be closed after it was flooded by sand.

High winds over the weekend caused tons of debris from Clacton's Martello Bay beach to be blown on to the promenade and Hastings Avenue.

The clear-up operation is set to continue today.

Street sweepers from Tendring Council's contractors Veolia Environmental Services, got a shock yesterday when they went to carry out routine work.

Crews were due to clean the road but discovered their way blocked by sand.

They reported it to the council which visited the site and called in a specialist coastal protection team.
