PARENTS are being urged to keep children safe during the summer holidays.

Rob Ashford, an East of England of England Ambulance Service spokesman, said although families will want to make the most of the outdoors, they must stay safe.

“It’s important people keep safety at the front of their minds, and parents and guardians should ensure that their children are fully aware on how best to stay safe while playing outside unaccompanied,” he said.

“We’re advising they teach their children about road safety, ensuring they know to look both ways before crossing the roads, use pedestrian and zebra crossings where possible, and not to play near to major roads so as to help avoid children running after wayward toys and balls.”

He added: “Sadly we do see an increase in road traffic collisions involving children over the summer period, but by following the Green Cross Code families can help to ensure a safer summer.”
