PLANS for a riverside centre in Rowhedge have been shelved in an attempt to unite the village.

The Rowhedge Heritage Trust had hoped to build on land by the River Colne given to the parish council by developers.

Colchester Council’s planning team approved proposals for a cafe, kitchen and two-floor exhibition space back in April after a five-year campaign.

But the trust has now put the plans on hold saying it does not want to further divide the local community.

The scheme had created controversy when opponents said the High Street land, north of Lion Quay, should be kept as open space.
