AN appeal to raise £100,000 has received a welcome boost.

The 100,000 Smiles appeal aims to pay for a new play area at Lexden Springs special school in Colchester.

Children at the school have severe learning difficulties but their health and well-being is improved through play.

However, the children need specialist equipment as some are wheelchair-bound and many have medical conditions and mobility problems.

More than £5,000 has been raised for the appeal, which is being supported by the Gazette, through a fete, sponsored walk and donations.

And now Kim Denison, the joint managing director of Red Cell public relations and marketing company in Coggeshall, has contributed £1,000 to the fund.

Mr Denison said he was moved to donate the money after the birth of his first grandchild, Ivy.

He said: “The dedication of people who look after children who are not as fortunate as our own is phenomenal, both the parents and the teachers.

“You look at what they do on a daily basis and you have to question your own ability.

“We felt it is important to put something back.

“We want them to have facilities around them which can help them.

“The school deserves the specialised equipment which is not on easily hand in the prevailing economic climate.”

The school and the PTA hope to transform the small school field and equip it with stimulating play equipment which can be used by the children.

The multi-purpose play area will include a bubble tunnel and wobble board which will help the youngsters with their agility and balance.

A wavy mirror provides sensory stimulation for children and underneath, a spongey floor would ensure children are not hurt if they fall.
