A DRIVER who witnessed a man having a heart attack at the wheel has urged everyone to get first aid training.
The man, aged in his 80s, was brought back to life by a passer-by who gave him CPR, and then kept alive with a defibrilator, until he was airlifted to hospital.
Leander Swift saw it all happen but was powerless to help and has decided next time she wants to have the skills to do something.
She said: “I let the man out of his driveway and then he stopped so I went around and when I looked back I saw he was slumped over the wheel.
“I ran over to help but don’t know CPR.
“There were two people walking past and I yelled at them could they help and one came over and gave him CPR and brought him back to life.
“It was intermittent and he kept coming and going.”
A defibrilator was brought over by a doctor at the nearby surgery while they waited for paramedics.
And Ms Swift says after witnessing something like this everyone should no CPR.
“I was shocked it took nine minutes for the paramedic to arrive and the pharmacist and policeman didn’t know CPR,” she added.
“I hope he is ok now and he would have died.
“I am going to go on a first aid course now and Sir Bob Russell is right, first aid should be on the national curriculum.
“If this ever happens again I want to know what to do.”
The accident happeend at about 11am on Monday ***july 29*** when the driver of a Toyota Yaris crashed into a wall while having a heart attack in Plume Avenue, Colchester.
He was airlifted to the specialist Harefield Hospital near London where he remains critical but stable.
