Record numbers of people turned up for the annual switch-on and late-night festive shopping in Wivenhoe.
Santa arrived on his sleigh with town mayor Penny Kraft and Colchester Salvation Army entertained the crowds, playing Christmas carols.
Despite the changeable weather yesterday, the rain held off for everyone to enjoy mulled wine, punch and mince pies.
St Mary's fundraising co-ordinator Mary Hignell said:"It's gone really, really well; everyone had a lovely time."
