A PETITION has been set up to save Essex’s register offices, after concerns closures may leave some people unable to tie the knot.

Last month the Gazette revealed the county’s 17 sites, including Stanwell House, Stanwell Street, Colchester and offices in Braintree, Witham, Clacton, Harwich and Halstead, face an uncertain future.

A spokesman said the Essex County Council is exploring the possibility of closing decommissioned rooms, which is where people can get married for just £135.

A final decision has not yet been made.

Nowaresident who is concerned about the plans has set up a petition to show support against the closures.

The person, who asked to remain anonymous, believes there has been a lack of consultation on the matter, as the question just refers to the main Brentwood office. They said: “I don’t think the public know about it.

“This is about pushing it out to more people.”

So far it has been signed by 120 people.
