WAS one of your parents or grandparents a Freeburgess of Colchester?
If so, you can apply for the ceremonial title, formally known as Freeman of the Borough, which dates back to 1189.
Applications for the status are open until September 10.
Mayor Theresa Higgins said: “I encourage any Colchester resident who thinks they meet the criteria to apply for their Freeburgess status, and I look forward to meeting them at the forthcoming ceremony in Colchester’s Town Hall.
“While it is purely a ceremonial honour, upholding such aspects of our heritage is part of keeping history alive in the town.”
There are two ways to become a Freeburgess – by birthright or servitude.
The children or grandchildren of Freeburgess can take on the title once they turn 21.
You can also achieve the honour if you have been an apprentice for seven years to a member of the Guild of Master Craftsman who also holds the title.
This includes everything from cabinet making and thatchers to aluminium fabrication and asbestos removal.
