POLICE have appealed for information after a fire which destroyed two boats by the River Colne in Colchester.
Essex University students and walkers on the Wivenhoe trail made numerous calls to the fire service after seeing smoke billowing from the boats at Hythe, Colchester.
Four fire crews were sent to the scene on Sunday at about 4.15pm.
The fire was out by 5.15pm.
Police said one of the boats was a small pleasure craft, whose owner was thought to have been last seen working on it about a week ago.
He had been doing some work to it but was not at the scene when the fire broke out. The fire service and the police are still investigating the cause.
Anyone with information or who saw anything suspicious before or after the fire, is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident 717 of August 16, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
