BUILDING a new bridge over the River Colne is back on the agenda, with discussions due to begin about connecting Rowhedge and Wivenhoe.

The idea has been the topic of forums and community groups for years, but now it is set to be debated by the local highways panel.

John Niland, a former transport planner with Essex County Council, has been leading the campaign to see a bridge built.

If the panel supports the notion, a request will be made to fund a feasibility study.

Mr Niland estimates the cost is likely to be about £750,000.

Ward member Mike Lilley said: “I am behind it.

“It would be for the benefit of residents in Rowhedge and Wivenhoe.

“It could benefit small businesses and both communities.”

The bridge could be used by commuters in Rowhedge looking to get to Wivenhoe train station.

It would also allow those on both sides to take advantage of another set of pubs, restaurants and shops with a short walk across the river.

Supporters believe lottery funding could be found to help fund it.

Those who are not so keen fear people from Mersea Island may use it as a quick route to a train station, parking in Rowhedge and causing traffic problems.

The idea is due to be discussed in the coming weeks.
