THE wind and rain did not hold back the sailors who took part in the Mersea Round the Island Race.
There were 135 entries and even though it was very wet, there was no trouble for the sailors.
The racers started at five-minute intervals yesterday from 12.20pm to 3pm.
The traditional race sees boats lifted over the Strood causeway on to the island.
Richard Haven, the race officer, said: “A week before they put their entries in saying what time and which way round they are going, which makes it quite interesting.
“A large majority of people turned up and raced, we had no trouble and we didn’t lose anybody.”
Mr Haven said the spectators ranged from young children to elderly couples, who all enjoyed the day and had a great experience.
