DRAGON’S Den star Duncan Bannatyne has added a Colchester health centre and spa to his extensive portfolio.

The businessman bought Clarice House, in Layer Road, for an undisclosed sum.

His company, the Bannatyne Group, already owns a string of hotels, spas and health clubs across the country.

A spokesman for the Bannatyne Group said: “This is a small local investment for an undisclosed sum.

“We are happy with the local management and the facilities will operate as normal.

“Terms and conditions of existing membership agreements will be honoured.”

When asked on Twitter whether Clarice House would be renamed with the Bannatyne brand, Mr Bannatyne replied: “We have not made a final decision on that yet.”

The Georgian building, a gym, exercise studios, swimming pool, steam room, sauna and aromatherapy room.

There is also a restaurant, and the building is hired out as a wedding venue.

Mr Bannatyne is one of the dragons on the hit BBC show Dragon’s Den, where starter companies pitch to businessmen and women to try to secure an investment.

The company also bought Clarice House’s spa and hotel in Bury St Edmunds.

Bill Frame, councillor responsible for economic growth at Colchester Council, said: “I’m happy this group has decided to take it on, and hopefully they will put some investment into it.

“It’s good these sort of national brands are coming to Colchester and recognising this is an area where they can expand and grow their business.

“It’s another feather in Colchester’s cap.”
