THE BEST town criers from across Northern Europe descended on Colchester for a continental competition.
The Guilde Van De Bellemannen, or Guild of Town Criers European Continent championship, takes place every two years and on Saturday nine competitors arrived in the town to show off their skills.
First prize went to Joris Goens from Veurne in Belgium, who is a former Belgian champion.
Second place was awarded to Rene Coupee of Hof Van Twente in the Netherlands.
Drama ensured as there was a tie for third place, with Ken Knowles of Litchfield coming up against current Belgian champion Jean Van De Perre from Gent in a cry off - Mr Van De Perre came out on top.
The best dressed crier award went to Peder Nielson from Broomyard in Hertfordshire.
The Best dressed couple prize went to Brenda Willison, the only female competitor, and her husband Peter.
Events took place at Lion Walk and Culver Square and the organisers were grateful to the sites for all their help.
Robert Needham, Colchester Town Crier, said: “I think it all went very well, it all ran smoothly and everything was in place.
“I think Colchester itself is a well know town across the continent and therefore it creates an attraction. Most of the criers were saying they had never been here before and it was an excellent opportunity to come to the town.
“It is important to me because like a lot of people I am passionate about Colchester and I want to promote the town and create a good image.”
