THOUSANDS of green toy soldiers will go on display at Colchester Castle as part of a poignant campaign to support former servicemen and women.
It will see the model force made up of 12,000 figurines go on show in the castle’s Lucas Vaults.
The 40,000 Strong model campaign has seen charity Help for Heroes create an exhibit made up of green toy soldiers.
The charity is highlighting how injury has forced almost 40,000 men and women to leave the military over the past 20 years.
The model force is going on display across the country and will come to Colchester over the weekend of April 4 and 5.
On the day there will be an opportunity to donate and own your own boxed figure.
As part of Colchester Council’s Armed Forces Covenant there will be free entry to serving personnel, veterans and their families for the opening weekend to view the model army.
Julie Young, the council’s culture boss, said: “We are delighted this important installation is coming to Colchester Castle.
“We are proud of our Garrison and this is a special opportunity to highlight the service that our troops have given.
“That is why we want to provide free access to the castle. Join Colchester Castle and Help for Heroes in supporting this campaign.”
Julian North, recovery manager for the East for Help for Heroes, added: “We are extremely grateful to Colchester Castle for hosting this 40,000 Strong installation, due to our connection with the town.
“Not only is it a major Garrison town but it is home to one of the four Help for Heroes Recovery Centres.
“Injuries have ended 40,000 military careers in the last 20 years and every day this number grows. Many of them tell us that their transition impacted significantly on their health, wellbeing and family.
“With the public’s support, we’re on a mission to ensure every wounded hero has the best opportunity to stand strong in civilian life”.
