MENTIONED in the Domesday Book, Lexden has long been one of the most sought after areas in Colchester.
These images from our archives show how it has changed over the decades.
The site it stands on now was crossed by the fortifications of iron age Colchester and the remains of the earthen ramparts can be seen at Bluebottle Grove, Lexden Park and alongside Straight Road.
There are also a number of burial mounds remaining, including Lexden Tumulus in Fitzwalter Road, believed to be the burial place of Cunobelinus or Cymbeline, king of the Catuvellauni.
The Lexden medallion, discovered at the site in 1924, is now in Castle Museum.
