Seeing mention of the old Maidenburgh Street, Sun public house brought back many happy memories (Gazette, December 7, “Reader John has fond memories of his parents running the Six Bells pub”).

When we worked in the ECN Creative Studio, my work mate, Paul Pugh, and I would sometimes pop in for a pint during our lunch break.

The publican was a real character who kept ferrets and often appeared with one whilst at the bar.

If I remember correctly, Paul and I drank Ind Coope Burton, which was the only real ale then on offer there.

It was a very nice pint and, when weather permitted, we would sit outside in the small yard.

On one occasion, when the Colchester Tattoo was being held in Lower Castle Park, we were enjoying a couple of beers, when an enormous military transport plane roared overhead at very close quarters.

The pub’s yard was a perfect vantage point and the sight could not have been more impressive!

No doubt the pub could be busy at times, but we were often the only customers in there, so I was not surprised when it closed.

Nevertheless, we were really sorry to see it go, and Paul still remembered it fondly many years later after moving to Yorkshire.
