A HOLIDAY park has moved to reassure Mersea residents after fears were raised over potential out-of-town visitors staying in caravans.

Peter Inson, who lives in East Mersea, said he had witnessed more than a dozen cars parked overnight near Coopers Beach Caravan Park.

He said: “I have photographed about 15 to 18 cars parked nearby and I have seen people walking in.

“People shouldn’t be living on the site and people shouldn’t be travelling to the site in the current circumstances, it is unnecessary.”

But a spokesman for the holiday park said the site is complying with restrictions.

He said some holiday home owners have remained at the park, as under government guidance they can remain on site if they would otherwise be made homeless.

“We are complying with the Government’s coronavirus restrictions,” he said.

“Apart from our core team of staff and key contractors who are legally able to undertake essential work, the only people on park are a small number of holiday home owners.

“In accordance with government guidance, this small number of holiday home owners were permitted to remain on park because they were on the park when the restrictions came into place and would have been homeless if they were required to leave.

“We have committed to not making anyone homeless during lockdown."
