LIDL has released a list of places in the UK where it wants to build new stores, and three of them are in Colchester
The supermarket chain says it wants to "continue our phenomenal growth" and "double our portfolio", which currently boasts more than 800 sites across the UK.
It has outlined the type of sites it is interested in developing and urged people to contact them regarding any possible leasehold deals that might be available.
Lidl is interested in building new, standalone stores, as well as converting existing buildings and developing sites on retail parks.
The specifications for its sites are:
- Prominent locations with easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow
- Freehold, leasehold or long leasehold opportunities
- Unit sizes flexible on design and scale between 14,000 and 26,500 sq ft
- 1.5 acres plus for standalone stores or up to four acres for mixed-use schemes
The supermarket giant has earmarked 59 sites in the east where it would like to open new stores, three of which are in Colchester.

Lidl already has two stores in the town, in Gosbecks Road, and off Abbot's Road.
This is where the chain is looking to open new stores in Colchester:
- Colchester - East
- Colchester - North
- Colchester - West
There are several other planned sites in Essex too, although in mid or south Essex.
The supermarket giant has already had plans approved for a third store in Colchester approved.
The new supermarkets will be built off St Andrew's Avenue, the site of the town's old Homebase.
The development will also bring a new Costa and Subway to the site, with the new Lidl set to create 40 new jobs.
Costa already has seven coffee shops in Colchester, located everywhere from the town centre to the entrance building at Colchester Hospital, whilst Subway has six restaurants in the town, five in and around the town centre and one in Stanway.
