Residents saw police and ambulance vehicles this morning (February 19) in Fullbridge, near the Tesco Extra.
According to one witness, there were “men in white suits looking in the river”.
Police have now said a man was discovered in the river.
A police spokesman said: “Emergency services were called shortly before 8.30am following reports of concern for the welfare of a person seen in the river on Fullbridge Road, Maldon.
“Officers and paramedics attended, but sadly a man in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene.
“His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”
