A TALENTED photographer is using his skills to raise awareness of autism.

Jordan Shults, 23, is preparing an online gallery of his best work and hopes it sends out a positive message.

Autism Awareness Day is taking place on Friday and Jordan’s work will be part of a virtual gallery being put together by Colchester Arts Centre, sponsored by Colchester Council.

Mum Nessa said: “We’re getting everything together and so excited to be taking part.

“Jordan is autistic and these awareness days make such a difference for people and families like ours, especially those who might be struggling because of Covid.

“Lockdown has made been a traumatic time for everyone.

“However, Jordan wants to make a positive impact on people’s lives and we’re confident about changing the face of autism, helping families who don’t get the right support and have a pretty miserable time.

“He’s a fantastic, upbeat young man who can make a difference to people’s attitudes and show anything’s possible.

“He’s an inspiration to our community.”

Jordan, or JShu, as he prefers to be known, is looking forward to showing off his work after tasting success in 2019.

Two years ago he had his work featured at an autism awareness event and he was a finalist at the Colchester Youth Awards.

The former Colchester Academy student, who had his work displayed at an open exhibition at Firstsite in October 2015, also had big plans for last year before things were scuppered by Covid.

“After 2020, it’s great to get back on track and look forward to exciting times ahead,” added Mrs Shults, who lives in Longridge, Colchester.

“It’s been a journey, to say the least, but it’ll certainly be nice to see some of the things we’ve been planning become a reality.

“Jordan’s had great support from Anthony Roberts, the Colchester Arts Centre director. He’s been a source of inspiration for years and always been supportive. I’m honoured he’s such an advocate.

“We’ve also had great support from Colchester’s Danny Hiles, from the Musicians Against Homelessness charity.

“After meeting him at an event, he helped set up Jordan’s webpage called JShu Photography.”

Mr Roberts said he was happy to support Jordan.

“I’m delighted we can help,” he said.

“He’s talented and it’s a great privilege to play a small role in this brilliant project for a brilliant artist.”

Colchester Academy principal Jenny Betts added: “We’re incredibly proud of Jordan.

“He’s exceptionally talented and should not only be celebrated for his talent, but also for the positive impact he’s had on the lives of others.

“He’s a fantastic role model and we’re proud to count him as one of Colchester Academy’s alumni.”
