PLANS for a commercial building featuring office and hospitality units to be built at a 1,600 home development have been revealed.

Mersea Homes has submitted a planning application to create a mixed-use building at its Chesterwell development, in Mile End.

The building will be split into four units on the ground floor with the largest set to be home to a cafe.

The others could become takeaways, offices or a things like a bar.

The building is part of the "neighbourhood centre" being created at Chesterwell, which will see a Co-op supermarket, as well as The Trinity School, a primary school and secondary school, eventually built.

The neighbourhood centre will be designed around a central square and car park.

A planning report states: "The centre square will offer generous and functional outdoor areas which are shaped by naturalistic planting areas and provide a range of meeting and gathering spaces as well as allowing circulation.

"The central grassy lawn area and seating deck area is designed as a focal point of the square to allow casual gatherings and socialising.

"The square extends north as a green link towards the school entrance.

"The green link is intended to have a more formal character framed by linear planters with an avenue of trees and in ground planting borders responding to the constraints of sewer easement.

"The carpark is intended to deliver a green setting by having as much green space as possible.

"The boundary of the carpark is defined with a variety of green spaces including hedge and tree planting."

There will also be several pedestrian links joining the nearby homes with the neighbourhood centre.

More than 420 new homes have already been completed at Chesterwell, with this number eventually expected to reach 1,600.

Work is underway to build the 6,000 sq ft Co-op whilst a planning application has yet to be submitted for the school.

Colchester Council will have the final say on the commercial building plans.
