COLCHESTER United fans have been remembering a very special date in their club’s proud history.
Today marks the 15th anniversary of the U’s magnificent promotion to the Championship, as Phil Parkinson’s side gleaned the point they needed from a 0-0 draw at Yeovil Town.
It earned them a place in English football’s second tier for the first time in their history, after clinching runners-up spot in League One.
Memories of that magical day - May 6, 2006 - are still very much alive for many supporters, especially those who were there celebrating on the terraces after making the long trip to Somerset.
Sam Bastyan, who only missed five games that season, said: “I remember staring at the clock in the second half, willing the time away.
“After 90 minutes, I ran straight down the front of the terrace and got my mug in paper, smiling with my mouth open and tightly-closed eyes.
“My hair apparently caught fire and some kind people put it out.
“I was in such a euphoric state and had no idea until way after!”
Jamie Hudson was watching the drama unfold back home.
He said: “I was only young back then but remember the season well, especially that last game of the season and listening on the radio as we were at Yeovil.
“It was pouring down outside as I watched Sky Sports, checking the Southend and Brentford scores - then running outside to celebrate promotion.”
Dan Davis added: “Oh, what a day.”
