I am writing in support of the excellent letter from Councillor Mark Goacher concerning the Alumno development (Gazette, May 17, “New Cabinet must reject flats plans”).
Mr Goacher correctly points out that there is overwhelming opposition to this project among the people of Colchester.
The council has, therefore, an obligation to consider this well-founded concern.
If it is still possible to cancel this project, which will blight the centre of Colchester, the new Cabinet must not support it.
In recent years Colchester has fallen behind Ipswich and Chelmsford as a centre of attraction for visitors.
Together with the wonderful Castle Park, the outstanding Castle Museum and Firstsite, there is a unique opportunity to develop the town centre with opportunities for relaxation, live music and street artists.
If we put up student flats, which are not needed, and hotels, we will be making our town unattractive for generations to come.
These decisions will affect our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
They will not be reversible, they will mark the centre of Colchester for years to come.
It is imperative that the council acts immediately.
We now have a newly-elected council.
Surely this is a fantastic opportunity for them to put the interests of the citizens Colchester before the interests of profit-seeking developers and businesses.
