FRESH calls have been made to close on of Colchester’s most polluted streets to through traffic permanently.
Green councillor for the ward Mark Goacher said the pavement repairs planned in Brook Street next week, which will close the road for five days, were desperately needed.
However, he said residents in the area would be better off if the five-day closure was extended permanently.
He said: “The pavements do need doing in Brook Street.
“I have no problem with the road being closed, in fact, I would close it permanently.
“It is the most polluted street in Colchester.
“It is one of the main places in the town where people do not switch off their engines whilst waiting at traffic lights.
“Closing the High Street to traffic has pushed more cars down Brook Street as residents of the Riverside estate have to go down there now meaning pollution is getting worse.”

Some residents of Brook Street enjoyed the road’s two month 2016 closure so much they asked for it to be closed for good.
Resident Jane Clarke spearheaded a campaign to keep it closed due to high-levels of pollution and noise.
She presented a petition with more than 100 signatures to County Hall asking for it to be considered.
