PART of the quayside river wall at the Hythe in Colchester has started collapsing into the water.
Piling has started to detach from a privately owned section of quayside on the north side of the river, not far from Hawkins Road.
Colchester Council said it had been made aware of the damage and officers had visited the site.
A separate section of quayside, on the opposite side of the river towards Rowhedge, was closed last year due to its deteriorating condition.
The adjoining footpath, linking Hythe with Rowhedge, is set to remain closed for about a year whilst repairs are investigated and completed.
The two problems are not said to be related.

A spokesman for Colchester Council said: "This section of the river wall, near Hythe Bridge, is privately-owned.
“A council officer has visited the site today and has confirmed that there has been recent movement of the river wall in that area, and piling has started to come away from the bank.
“We would like to reassure residents that this section of the riverbank is not connected to the Fieldgate Quay site, next to the Hythe to Rowhedge footpath, where we are preparing for repairs to the river wall to start in the autumn.”
