WITH the weather finally brightening up, many of us are spending a bit more time in the great outdoors at the moment.
And with lockdown restrictions being lifted, we're enjoying our newfound freedom to get out and about more.
Although hospitality businesses have now reopened again, with the weather improving a picnic is still a brilliant choice for an al fresco afternoon in the sun with the family.
In Colchester we've no shortage of amazing spots for a picnic.
Places where you can enjoy some family time, whilst also taking in the amazing sights of our part of north Essex.
Here are seven of the best spots for a picnic with a view in Colchester:
Castle Park
We'll start with an obvious one...
Castle Park is the jewel in Colchester's crown and in our eyes the best park in the east of England.
There's so many different sites to take in including the oldest surviving Norman keep in Europe, Colchester Castle, the stunning floral displays and of course the wildlife.
Just make sure the squirrels don't steal your sandwiches.
Cudmore Grove, Mersea
If you fancy a trip a little further afield with the family there aren't many spots better than Cudmore Grove.
The East Mersea country park, run by Essex County Council, has grassland areas and wild beaches to enjoy.
The views over the Brightlingsea are stunning.
There's also parking and a large playpark available on site.
Dedham
There's lots of perfect spots in Constable Country for a picnic.
You can take in the scenery as well as admire the local wildlife and the walk to Flatford is good for all ages after, or before, you've eaten.
However, please make sure you take your litter home with youand picnic responsibility.
Litter has been a problem in Dedham, particularly on the River Stour footpath.
Chappel Viaduct
Again a little further afield, but Chappel Viaduct is a sight worth travelling to see.
There's a footpath running between its arches and some lovely grass areas, perfect for enjoying a picnic.

Bourne Mill
Bourne Mill is owned and maintained by the National Trust and as you'd expect it is a wonderful heritage asset.
You can gaze at the ducks swimming on Bourne Pond whilst enjoying your picnic.
An entry fee is payable, unless you're a National Trust member, but in our eyes it is well worth it.
St Botolph's Priory
There aren't too many places in the world where you can enjoy a picnic whilst gazing at a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
However, the grounds of St Botolph's Priory is one exact spot.
The area had a bad reputation a while ago for attraction unwanted visitors, but Colchester Council has done a lot to improve things in recent years.
It is one of the most unique spots for a picnic in the borough, and with a car park just next door, it is perfect for a sunny day.
West Mersea Beach
West Mersea's beach is famous for its pastel coloured beach huts.
And there aren't many better spots to take in the sea air in Essex.
Just watch out for sand getting in your food, particularly on windy days.
